Some of them hate to clean and have learned very quickly not to take out much. This year I am in the Autistic class and they dont get free choice. Karen I love the way you have center time. The kids have to try to beat the timer and have the room picked up and put away with every thing in the right spot. I have heard that the kids love it. I taught Kindergarten in a public school and those center times were very structured and as a teacher we had to make sure students visited every center. Some teachers try keep track of centers the children go to. I do not change center materials every day. Like you, I use the same system when it comes to free choice, after all, thats what it is.
If someone is actively playing with something, it does not have to be put away yet. It ends up causing more problems than it is worth. It is so helpful with great tips and ideas. The last two years I was in an ESE Pre-k class and tried to have work time the way you described it. She also works as a full-time Pre-K teacher in Georgia. Maybe I will add two more to the limit in the Blocks and Dramatic Play Centers which are the most popular ones. Theyre allowed to move freely, as long as they clean up first. No matter what system you use, its important for students to know the expectations for the classroom centers. The Sensory Table is an exception: I do limit that to two children, as that helps limit the amount of sand orwater that is thrown or splashed out of it. For my fours I spend the first month in free-choice then switch to color-coded cente. I love your idea of letting the children decide their centers because not only does it allow the children to enjoy themselves it also teaches them decision making skills and so much more. What works for you might not work for me, but that doesnt mean either of us are wrong. The play time in centers is closer to 45 minutes, as there is a play planning process first. How do we expect them to effectively make choices, or be independent thinkers, or problem solve if we constantly dictate everything to them. I call my time play and work ! For the really tough cases, I give the child a wet wipe, and tell them they can be a really special helper and wash the tables. In my experience whenever, I used your method I was criticized by others who claimed that center time and free time were not the same things and that I should have a more structured center time. We have the room divided into three areas (coded by colored stars), each with a couple centers within (such as writing, dramatic play and science). I teach a 4-5 year old Pre-K class. I currently teach 3 years olds a whole new world than the 4-5 olds I had in the past!! I am finding this hard to deal with. This is also how Im required to run Center Time. I do not like to micro mange the kids during Center Time. and NAEYC. . But they certainly are free to go anywhere they want for as long as they want and are not forced to visit every center or stay in one center for a certain period of time. So glad to hear that many other teachers feel the same way about Center Time. Thats a great idea! Some Pre-K programs have Small Groups running at the same time as Centers.
I do have a cleanup helper that takes a sign around the room to give the kids a five minute warning (they really listen to their peers more than me) and he/she also gets to ring the final bell. Instead of open centers the first few weeks, I spend time during center time to introduce each center in detail. Centers are clearly defined areas of the classroom grouped by topic, such as blocks, dramatic play, art etc. Time management during centers is so important for our little learners. Ive been a preschool teacher for over 20 years, and basically, I run the learning centers the same way you do during free choice time. Typically the morning center times are more academic and the afternoon center time allows for more free choice. In my classroom you will find interesting provocations with natural items (sticks, mini stumps, seashells, leaves, rocks etc.). They absolutely love it and are so motivated to clean up so that they can have free choice again the next day that was their self imposed comment :). Small group but then free to go explore centers. Once everyone has completed our clean up phrase, I tell the children to clean up the center they are in at that moment and then go help their friends in other centers until the entire room is cleaned up. Yes, some do get upset. Occasionally I will close down a center for a while if the kids arent taking care of the items. IT works, sometimes I have had a child say, I didnt play there, but I just say I understand that, but its your area today and they do it! I now babysit my granddaughter and will continue to read your ideas as they are super. My room is smaller than other preschool rooms I have experienced, so I do limit the number of students in several of my centers. Our center time is 1 hr and 15 min and this works very well for the children and the teachers! A teacher at another school in our county has a light table and I would love for us to get one. The goal is to have each child choose a center and then stay in that center for the ENTIRE play time.
This is similar to the way my center time is ran, The only difference was the child that doesnt want to clean up. I also tell kids to get toys that are trying to get away! On Friday, we have free choice center day. As a grown up, I dont think I would be happy staying in one center for a full hour when I interact with the kids. When I read what you do, It was like reading my own testimony. Clean up time is a DISASTER in my room! I do free choice centers too but to encourage children to engage in different activities, I only offer 4 centers a day. Several years ago, I made the decision to get rid of my Center Chart and allow the children to choose freely from the centers in my classroom.
As soon as everything settles down (usually around week three or four) you can interact with the children more because youll spend less time redirecting. This helps children form a plan, focus their play, & change their plans/thoughts to extend their activity to get the most learning out of a well planned center. I appreciate your commentary and things you have said often reiterate what Im doing or give me some good ideas on how to re-evaluate how Im doing things. I am a Pre-K teacher with 10 children:) Thank you!! We use beans, popcorn, cotton balls, leaves( dollar stores sells cloth ones if there are allergies) flower petals, and ice frozen with toys in them ( we use turkey batters and bowls of salt water that create craters when squirted over the ice), we also use the magnetic letters with spoons and bowls to make alphabet soup. We allow our children 60 minutes of free play time inside and 30 minutes outside daily.
However, Im now opening my own daycare and was wondering the best way to do centers for younger children. First, divide your centers into groups of 4 or 5 and then group the children into groups of 4 or 5 as well. I move around the room also. Our day starts with 30 minutes of free choice play. I dont have dots on my center charts or posters because sometimes I add or take away the number of clips per center depending on which activities are out.Students can change centers as much or as little as they want. They have to stay in that area for their day but are free to choose within it. While some classrooms may hold small groups during centers, I prefer to do small groups during our math centers and literacy center times. What to do about kids who dont clean up? As a Tools of the Mind classroom, children choose centers in a rotating order (if you choose first one day, the next you will be last). Give them very specific directions. Each center has a symbol and a color. While that sounds nice in theory (sustained attention and building peer interactions), I dont see how any 4 year old could stay in one center for an entire hour and still be a happy little person. If you want students to pick a center and/or be able to stay in a center, they need to be taught about the centers. At first I thought I was given the student to much freedom about centers, but it is only 1 hour! It has made a huge difference! Yes, I do have literacy and math centers. Awesome Karen! They would all go to block if possible. But lets face it, center time is only one small part of your day. Guess which child also had to go potty whenever it was clean up time in preschool? I used to flicker the light but children copied and started playing with the switch, do I ceased using that signal . Thank you for sharing your techniques. Hey Karen, love your ideas .. We also run our centre time the way you do.. Just that our centres change everytime except for three.. 11 is a lot and wud love to know how do you manage them?? My pick up idea that I have used for many years, and it really works, goes like this, I also have a pick up song, Hi Karen, No offence, but that does not sound very joyful. Maybe a certain child enjoys and is very good at straightening the block center or a certain shelf. We need to develop whole children who question, wonder and learn. Ha ha ha! Just bought the clean up song super cute. If there are two art easels, then two children can paint. This way , i can monitor better the skills each child still need to work on or enhance.
It is so nice to get this affirmation. All I can say is thank you. I know they are enjoying the time and do not want to stop. We have 11 centers, which you can read more about at the link. We tried this for several years in our 3 yr. old class and it did not work. While using HighScope curriculum in the past, we used Plan-Do-Review question during Circle Time b4 centers, using a $Tree microphone. Some teachers may also do individual assessments during this time. The cleanliness is not the important part to me, its cleaning up after themselves that is. What do you consider an acceptable noise level? You have not been in my classroom, you cannot say that my room is not joyful. For some reason the kids love to show me five, and we have no problem getting everyone to stop wherever they are playing to do it together.
