They have to stay in that area for their day but are free to choose within it. As a Tools of the Mind classroom, children choose centers in a rotating order (if you choose first one day, the next you will be last). Give them very specific directions. Each center has a symbol and a color. While that sounds nice in theory (sustained attention and building peer interactions), I dont see how any 4 year old could stay in one center for an entire hour and still be a happy little person. If you want students to pick a center and/or be able to stay in a center, they need to be taught about the centers. At first I thought I was given the student to much freedom about centers, but it is only 1 hour! It has made a huge difference! Yes, I do have literacy and math centers. Awesome Karen! They would all go to block if possible. But lets face it, center time is only one small part of your day. Guess which child also had to go potty whenever it was clean up time in preschool? My pick up idea that I have used for many years, and it really works, goes like this, I also have a pick up song, Hi Karen, No offence, but that does not sound very joyful. Maybe a certain child enjoys and is very good at straightening the block center or a certain shelf. We need to develop whole children who question, wonder and learn. Ha ha ha! While using HighScope curriculum in the past, we used Plan-Do-Review question during Circle Time b4 centers, using a $Tree microphone.
