By far, the biggest challenge was to make sure that I could mount the motor accurately on the existing frame, since the new motor is so much larger.The most logical thing to do, rather than try and bend 1/8" steel accurately was to re-use the hinge part of the mounts.The first thing was to figure out what the distance was between the hinge mounts and the spindle. 
Of course, there are a number of mechanical tricks implemented along the way, such as turning the motors shaft down and even adding a flat with an angle grinder. Made to demanding specifications, these motors offer the same quality as the motors we install on our heavy-duty machines. I want a simple on/off like original so it's easy to use/sell and also something that is aesthetically pleasing so that counts out the tread mill and washing machine motor. I don't think there's a universal definition of Farm or Compressor duty motors. 
In almost every case, there was a better store bought solution somewhere but we just didn't have the time or money to get it right when we needed it.
The forge, a Champion, had a ratchet lever/gear/belt drive, but had missing parts, hence the conversion. The most obvious upgrade here is adding in a 2.6 HP treadmill motor, which should give it plenty of oomph for challenging jobs. volts my lil press sucked to, but 270 buck for a nice ryobi, forget hp, but half inch chuck, light, lazer crosshairs, and lever action speed adjust with digital readout wazza no brainer. Sorry, but I am still using my treadmill motor for the intended purpose, my cardiologist insists that I do a regular routine on it, I don't think he would like to hear that I have repurposed (a word that I hate) it. 6 years ago. Sure, ad-blocking software does a great job at blocking ads, but it also blocks useful features of our website. As such, if you have a cheap and/or worn out 'press, it might be worth taking the time to give it a little attention, as Eric Strebel did in the video below. Has it been dependable? I placed the old motor on the edge of a table, and measured from the edge of the table to the side of the spindle, then subtracted .250 to bring me to the center. Some of these are essential for the basic functionalities of our websites. For a large drill press I would look at getting a 3ph motor as most people don't want them and then power it with a VFD so again you have variable speed. 9Four, if these are for resale, then to get top dollar, you want as close to period correct motors as possible, so now I'd vote for yard sale motors, (which is part of why I buy those old motors when they pop up). The drill goes back together in reverse order: Parts diagram and replacement ordering info. The $10 garage sale motor would be perfect, I just wanted to know if there was a certain type for vertical mount applications or if any ball bearing motor would work? The press I use is a Craftsman 9" model 137.219090. Would either of those work, what is the difference and where is the most economical place to buy a replacement motor?

A lot of the this type of hacking/mods aren't time/cost effective in most situations but you shouldn't write them off as silly or wasteful as a consequence because there will be times and circumstances when they come in handy.
